I was at the lastest discussion about communion and the church of scotland in Edinburgh today. it is a wee eight person group looking at what communion means to us in our contemporary church and there was some fascinating stuff. We had all done papers each on a different aspect of the communion liturgy and there were some big questions to ask and traditions revealled that we have entierly lost. Some not for to greater good.
For example, did you know that traditionally there was no financial offering during communion because you can't bring someone to the table and then ask for their money thus it was always a retiring offering, or if there was an offering it was directly given to the poor. Indeed some congregations still, and Abbotsford did until recently have an offering for the Benevolent Fund on Communion Sunday, but no money went into the coffers of the church.
Or that church law says that if someone asks for the common cup then they have to be provided the common cup. It doesn't work the other way around with wee glasses. So if you want the common cup then you can get it.
Fascinating. But does it save the world? Does it open up heaven?
These questions and more at "Death by Chocolate" at 9.45 on Sunday morning for 40 minutes with breakfast thrown in.
Anyone visited Wilderness Blessing in the photo album?
