Just discovered this week that in Ayrshire traditionally it was shortbread they used for communion and not typical bread. And in the early church it was water they used and not wine. These communion traditions get more and more varied whcih speaks into our idea of what we've always done at communion. I wonder if people remember back to when the elders sat in a semi-circle round the chancel? People will remember that from 10 years ago but I bet it hasn't figured in any memory since, or the offering taken before the communion. It was more than 10 years ago that we did that. It's a living tradition and that's what gives it life I think. These wee things don't say anyththing about the big thing, about God in the world, love broken and restored, sacrifice and solidarity with the poor and oppressed, and the way the realm of God makes its way into the world.
