We had a session meeting tonight and all the new charity regulations were up for discussion. I think we all flew towards the worst case scenario imagingin this was going to be the downfall of the church. We did that when Child Protection legislation came in, and we've done it for a whole ot of other things. But when you see how it actually works, it's okay. It's another layer of stuff we have to think about, but it's workable and possible and the church doesn't implode.
Now all Board and Session members are trustees of the church (we always have been). Panic. But no need to. I've been checking on the church's extranet legal depaterment circulars to find out what they can tell us about duties and responsibilities in being a trustee and while it doesn't exactly exhaust the information if you go here and then scroll down to Congregational Office Bearers Guidance Notes then you'll get some idea. It is all pretty reasonable and sensible.
However we've a wee bit of a learning curve to cope with until we are all familiar and that will happen in due course. We're not going to disappear in a bundle of Charity legislation.
