Two stories twisted together. But, hey what's this thing the lectionary has just done to us by telling us last week that Jesus was sailing over to the other side (Gentile territory) and then this week that he was sailing back from Gentile territory. I want to know what happened when God's Culture faced the Gentiles. Need to wait till next year in the lectionary. That's a bit useless.
Anyway we've two women here, one, in my mind, older and the other younger. No names. There's others in the story that have names but no one saw fit to remember theirs. There are a few other women like that in the Gospels: the Syro-Phoenecian Woman, the woman who annointed Jesus, and one other I can't remember at the moment. But you know what, it was these nameless women in contrast to the named disciples of whom Jesus talks about being full of faith.
Is it faith or hope or less about getting it all clear in their heads and more about just doing something about it. Either way it seems to be something that can be summed up as: Just believe! Just get on with it. Stop working it out. Trust it. Give it a go. You might like it. And if you are looking for a name for yourself, along with that, in Jesus experience the people with a name for themselves are the people who don't actually get it. With the culture of God it's the little people, the nameless, the poor, the marginalised, the fear-filled, the one the world has forgotten about who get what Jesus is about. And they just go ahead and trust it. Just believe!
