It's just coming to the end of the final TV debate here in the UK before the General Election next week. But it really isn't a debate, is it! There are 70 odd rules governing these debates and I have no idea what they were but no one is really debating. Have they forgotten how to do that? All they are doing is using the 'debate' as a platform for their own policies and decrying each other with rhetoric and bad mouthing each others manifestos with misleading comments rather than offer thoughtful reaction to each other and some honesty.
Is that like the church too? Everyone has their minds already made up about what they believe and there is no grace to listen to and hear what others are saying and finding space for living together, helping each other. Everyone is seen as an enemy. So little generosity.
They should have been in the church last night at our special meeting on same-sex relationships. Now there is how you build community, not this forever scoring of points and making ourselves as different as we can from each other. Sadly people start believing these differences, believe in their own propaganda, and it just always divides communities and societies. Bad religion and bad politics are as bad as each other. In fact they are the same as each other.
