I have an idea
that we should be let of
going to church
all the way through lent
that church closes its doors
shuts up shop
locks everything down
puts up a sign. “gone fishing”
leaves a note in the milk bottles
no milk for 6 weeks please
and the people of the way
not to come back
not until Easter Day
Shut up the church
and go and live beyond the church
go and live simply by faith over the six purple weeks
go and live by trusting those things
we so readily say we believe in
go and be the people
of the way
like Abraham
who sets out by faith
in faith
with faith
through the wilderness
without the weekly doze of church
go and have nothing to comfort life
except those things we trust
called faith
those vision we have]called dreams
that longing we harbour
called hope
Go and trust these things
in the gathering darkness
hang on to those things we talk about
that bring us life
and hold us through all thing
Let them do that
trust them
believe in them
let them hold you
through the wilderness
and only when the increasing darkness
has been crushed
will the doors be open
when the sun has risen
will the church welcome you
when the tomb has been broken
will this place be ready for you
when it will be repainted in lemons and gold
it will be warmer
smell fresher
seem newer
until then
survive simply on faith
and dreams
and hope
trust these things in this wilderness
close up the churches for lent
walk through the desert
grasping hold of those Lenten gifts
of longing
and expectation
and promise
those very gifts
alone through which
we can recognise
and know
and believe
resurrection
