Is it on the journey or in the hospitality that Jesus is recognised? We keep settling down in the church, familiar with our surroundings, our theology, our neighbours and there is nothing wrong with that if there is more to living faithfully than that.
Emmaus invites us out and engage people with the story of love and grace and with hospitality let the story become an action of love and grace. It is a dangerous combination because these are the ingredients that bring Jesus back to us: story telling and table sharing. Both these things transform us. They open our eyes to bigger visions and encourage our hearts with new experiences.
Emmaus calls us out of where we have been but doesn't send us away for ever. It continually calls us back again to share what we have found, to encourage those who haven't journeyed, to enthuse people with the good news that Jesus is still alive and in the world, even if we don't always meet him in the church.
