Today, Friday 23rd September 2011, we celebrate the September Equinox, one of two days in the year when the length of day and the length of night are approximately equal and to some, the first day of Autumn. At about this time in biblical days, the feast of Tabernacles was celebrated and there was the ceremony of the outpouring of water, drawn from Siloam, in commemoration of the refreshing stream which had come forth miraculously out of the rock at Meribah (Ex. 17:1-7).
In a similar vain we have our Harvest Thanksgiving in a few weeks time.
The length of daylight hours seems to have shortened very quickly this year ( I must be getting old!!!) and the street lights are now on before I sit down and relax for the evening (if I get the chance!). Already I am hearing people speak of Christmas and what services we shall be having this year. Before we know it, the other equinox will be with us again!
However, on the subject of services. What would people like to see by way of 'special' services over the coming months (Blue Christmas, Solstice Light Festival, Carols Round the Christmas Tree, etc)?
Some of these services have become traditional (we have had them at least once) here in Abbotsford and I am sure that we would not like to see them disappear. Importantly, they are also services which can be organised and led by the congregation and we will need to get the congregation involved as much as possible in them.
Therefore... please let me know your thoughts and ideas???
Please feel free to contribute to this discussion wherever you are in the world and if you are visiting this place, we would also be interested to hear how things are for you, now that the nights are getting longer than the days (or the days are getting longer than the nights!!!)
Love to the world!
