Today we heard of Jesus's call to "Follow Him" (Mark 1:14-20)
It must have taken a lot of nerve to follow someone you didn’t really know. To simply give up what you had and make that decision to follow.
That commitment.
The disciples seem to have taken that step into the unknown almost without thinking.
As always, Jesus chose a group of people who were at the lower end of the normally accepted pecking order. Fishermen.
Since I was a wee boy I have had a great love for the East Neuk of Fife. A close-knit community living cheek to jowl with the North Sea.
I remember well the days when the older fishermen would put on their dark blue suits, dark blue knitted polo neck sweaters and ubiquitous bunnets and meet down at Anstruther harbour to reminisce. I recently attended the 60th birthday party of a friend that I first met over 40 years ago while on holiday in Anstruther. His father was a fisherman, out in all weathers to earn a living. An honest, Christian man like the majority of the others.
He may have been a simple man but, if he was anything like those first disciples, then all I can say is if it was good enough for him then it is good enough for the rest of us.
Are you ready to follow - to make the commitment?
