Today, 11th February, marks the birth date, in 1847, of one of the greatest inventors of modern times, Thomas Alva Edison.
Edison helped bring light to the world.
He did not invent the first electric light bulb as is commonly mis-quoted, but he did create the first commercially practical incandescent light before going on to capitalise on this by patenting a system of electric-power generation and distribution, something that I owe 45 years of my working life to.
He also helped in the development of the phonograph and motion picture camera thus contributing to mass communication and greatly influencing the world in which we live today.
Edison was at one time accused of being an atheist following remarks he made that "... nature made us, nature did it all, not the gods of the religions". However, he said that he had been misunderstood and clarified his position by stating, "I do not believe in the God of the theologians; but that there is a Supreme Intelligence I do not doubt."
Edison was proud of the fact that despite having worked as a naval consultant during the 1st World War and over 1000 patents having been taken out in his name, he never invented weapons to kill.
He is quoted as saying "Nonviolence leads to the highest ethics, which is the goal of all evolution. Until we stop harming all other living beings, we are still savages".
Let there be light indeed!
