Advent Communion should be a little different (shouldn't it???) and our service this morning was certainly so.
When I arrived at church at 10:15am to open up & finalise things for our Advent Communion everything seemed fine... heating was on and welcoming as I entered the 'Link Corridor'. Opened up the halls... again lovely and warm. The new insulation on the roof must be working, thought I.
Right!... through to the church and get on with setting up.
As soon as I entered the 'Welcoming Hall' (???) the chill hit me... The heating in the Sanctuary had failed to come on!
To cut a long story mercifully short, the decision was immediately taken to get the chairs out in the Large Hall and transfer all the Communion Elements, Advent Candles, etc, etc, and have our service there.
Then it dawned on me that we no longer have a piano in the hall.
Quick, phone Bill Kean... 'Sorry he left 10 minutes ago' said his wife and should be just about arriving at church. A quick chat with Bill on his arrival and another decision was taken. Bill would start off each hymn by singing the first line in the appropriate key... No instrumental accompaniment!!!
By the time most people arrived everything was complete and when our Minister Ruth arrived she went straight in to it without batting an eyelid.
The singing was MAGNIFICANT! (including 'Happy Birthday to You' to Freya.)
End result... an 'Advent Communion' that was certainly different and one to remember.
Hopefully the stuck valve in the Heating System will be sorted by next Sunday... but then again... BILL!!!
PS - 'Intimation of the day' goes to everyone who contributed, in any way whatsoever, to helping raise £1850 at yesterday's Christmas Fayre. Fantastic! THANK YOU ONE AND ALL!
